What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic was founded in 1895. It is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. The brain and the spinal cord are protected by a hard bony structure, the skull and vertebral column. When the vertebrae lose their normal position, becoming subluxated, they also lose proper motion which causes irritation to the nervous system. The irritation can effect the nerves which supply the tissues and organs causing a lack of function. This lack of function is called the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Chiropractors locate and correct the areas of the cranium and spine that are subluxated (misaligned). The correction of a subluxation is done through a procedure called an adjustment. The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to correct the position of the subluxated area as well as bring proper motion back into the joint. The chiropractic adjustment can be accomplished in a variety of different ways, but the goal of the chiropractic adjust is the same for all, remove nerve stress to allow the body to do what it needs to do to maintain a healthy state.
The philosophy of Chiropractic states that the body has an inborn ability to heal itself. By correcting Vertebral Subluxations through the chiropractic adjustment, and relieving the nervous system from stress, the body is better able to stay in a state of health. The doctor doesn’t “heal” your body, only you can heal your body. Many medications, including aspirin, don’t correct your problem, but only cover up your symptoms.
Therefore, Chiropractic is not just a science, but also an art and philosophy. Chiropractors look to correct the cause of your problem.
